Oh, and I think here too they can have a job to earn those community credits...something cassmatt's ds should look into in case he already works or has had a summer job in the past.
I am not POSITIVE, but I am pretty sure that a paying job doesn't count here towards volunteer hours.

Yeah, a paying job can count towards Work Experience / Career Exploration, but not volunteer hours -- or at least that's how it works at our school.

I don't know when they can start banking the hours though? I guess when they get to highschool, so for us that would be next year. He will most likely have the 50 hours done before he's finished grade 9!
I also agree with you and the others, let the boy figure it out himself.
This is copied right off of our school's website, so they can actually start earning hours IN grade 9 (although I went to the public highschools information night and I thought their rules were the summer AFTER grade 9).
1. The Ministry hours are NOT a requirement of your graduating, rather of your convocation! In order to “walk the stage” with your class, you will need to complete 50 service hours by the grad list postings (typically the beginning of May) of your Grade 12 year (Suggested time: 15 hours in grade 10; 15 hours in grade 11; 20 hours in grade 12).
2. Your ministry hours can be either in or out of school hours and they must be completed anytime from Grade 9 until the specified time of Grade 12.
3. If you are not sure whether or not the activity you have planned for your ministry hours, please check with your Religious Studies teacher for permission. The general 2 rules should help serve as a guide:
a) You cannot be compensated for your good works (money, etc)
b) Your service must help another person, (not animal) outside of the general duties prescribed within your immediate family. (Ex. Babysitting your sister does not count; babysitting a cousin or family friends’ child does!)

It's different in Ontario, you cannot graduate without them.

What date do they have to have them done by to graduate this year? Mark the day on the fridge for him as a reminder and leave it to him to get out and get the hours.

I've never heard of that, and I have a kid in grade 12 here. Since when do kids need to volunteer in order to graduate? Doesn't that take the "volunteer" out of the concept if it becomes something one is forced to do?
I did tons of volunteer stuff when I was in high school, but only because I wanted to, not because of grad requirements or because I had to. Ditto for my dd in grade 10. She wants to do it for fun, not because she has to in order to graduate.

I agree, not much point when it's mandatory.

I have a ds graduating from grade 12 this June (I hope!), and he doesn't plan to go to post-secondary next year. I'm okay with that, because quite frankly, he is not the least bit scholarly right now, and needs to mature a lot more before he is ready. I refuse to fund his post secondary until he matures, because it is a waste of money otherwise. I am not stressing over it because it is HIS life, not mine, and I cannot force him to do anything. HE has to do it himself.

its not the 'volunteer' part that is mandatory for graduation (I agree.. saying you have to volunteer is a bit weird!). Here its part of the Graduation Transitions thing .. there's three parts, health, community connection or something like that and something else that I can't remember right now
.. its part of the community connection part - they need 30 hours of work experience OR volunteer work.
