Hmm....sounds like a croupy cough to me. Try taking the baby in the bathroom and turn on the shower for moisture and see if it helps. Or bundle the baby up and take it outside for a walk in the stroller to see if it lessens the symptoms. Usually those are the two things I was told to do when my babies were young and had croupy cough.
But then again the little one is only 4 months old. And I am certainly not a medical professional so I would take the baby in to the doctor. Trust me no doctor is going to think you are wasting their time. Coughs in young babies can quickly turn into respiratory problems and that is serious. So take your little one in. I know it is a pain and you will probably have to wait a fair length of time. If there are a lot of people in there with different illnesses I would let the nurse know that you are there and then take the baby into a lobby or another room so it is not around all the other sick people. Thats all you need is for your little one to catch something on top of what they already have.

Almost 4 mths? Take the baby in. It souds like croup. If it is, the sooner you can give the meds, the faster your baby is going to feel better (and the sooner YOU will feel better). Poor little munchkin
Keep us updated please.

Keep an eye on it.
I'm not a Dr but a croup expert, and that sounds like croup to me, and antibiotics won't make it better if you're hoping they will.
If the croupy/barky cough continues, and almost certainly will be worse at night, take the child to emerg where they can adminster a steriod treatment, check oxygen levels and decide whether or not to hospitalize.
Not to make you worry, but if you're not familiar with croup, it can get serious fast. Older dd was in the hospital many times with croup, and even now at 17 still gets a croup like cough in the winter if she gets sick.
It's one of those times let the real experts, not the Dr Moms tell you it's nothing serious if you go, and don't be afraid to go to emerg with such a young baby!I hope everyone is feeling better soon, tis the season!!
